Ask anyone who runs a cyber café near a college, and they will tell you the same story. Every recruitment season, a line of worried candidates shows up asking whether their form can be “fixed.” Most of the time, the problem is something tiny that took five seconds to get wrong.
Government recruitment is strict for a reason. When lakhs of people apply for a few thousand posts, boards cannot chase every candidate to clarify a detail. If something does not match, the easiest option is to reject it. Here are the mistakes that cause the most damage, and how to avoid each one.
1. Name not matching the Class 10 certificate
Your name on the form should match your matriculation certificate exactly, including spelling and order. “Mohd.” versus “Mohammad,” a missing middle name, or initials in the wrong place can all create problems at document verification. Use the certificate as your reference, not your Aadhaar card or your everyday spelling.
2. Uploading the wrong photo
Notifications specify the photo size, background, and sometimes the date by which it should have been taken. Selfies, photos with caps or dark glasses, and old pictures that no longer look like you are common causes of rejection. Get a fresh passport-style photo, and keep both a soft copy and a few prints, because the same photo may be needed on exam day.
3. Signature in capital letters
Several boards specifically reject signatures written in block capitals. Sign in running hand, the same way you would on a bank document, on plain white paper with a dark pen.
4. Choosing the wrong category
Selecting a reserved category without a valid certificate, or using a certificate that has expired, can cancel your candidature even after you clear the exam. If your OBC non-creamy layer or EWS certificate is due for renewal, renew it before you apply.
5. Ignoring the age cut-off date
Age is calculated on a specific date mentioned in the notification, not on the day you fill the form. Candidates sometimes assume they are eligible when they cross the limit by a few days on the cut-off date. Check it carefully and look at the relaxation rules for your category.
6. Treating “appearing” as “passed”
Some notifications allow final-year students to apply, and others do not. If the notification says the qualification must be completed by the last date of application, applying while your result is pending may lead to rejection later.
7. Paying the fee but not completing the form
This one hurts. A candidate pays the fee, the page times out, and they assume the form is submitted. Always download or print the final confirmation page. If the payment went through but you see no application number, contact the helpline before the last date.
8. Leaving it to the last day
Recruitment portals slow down badly in the last 48 hours. Payment gateways fail, OTPs arrive late, and servers crash. Apply at least a week before the deadline. You lose nothing by being early.
The easiest way to stay early is to know about a vacancy the day it is announced. Following a site that posts the latest government job notifications along with the last dates helps you plan your applications instead of rushing them.
9. Using someone else’s phone number or email
Your admit card link, exam city information and sometimes interview calls come by SMS or email. If you used your cousin’s number or a cyber café’s email ID, you may never see them. Always use contact details that belong to you and that you will keep for at least two years.
A quick checklist before you click submit
- ☐ Name, father’s name and date of birth match the Class 10 certificate
- ☐ Photo and signature meet the size and format rules
- ☐ Category certificate is valid on the cut-off date
- ☐ Age and qualification checked against the notification
- ☐ Phone number and email are your own
- ☐ Fee paid and confirmation page saved as PDF
The bottom line
Preparation for a government exam takes months. Filling the form takes twenty minutes. It makes no sense to let a careless twenty minutes undo all that effort. Slow down, read the notification line by line, and check your form once more before you submit. Future you will be grateful.
