Bunk beds are ideal for a child’s room or for saving space in a small space. Because not all bunk beds have the same small twin bed, they can be used by a wide range of people. While twin mattresses are still the most typical size for bunk beds, you can now get bunk beds that suit up to king size mattresses.
Knowing your sizing options is helpful in finding the proper bunk bed mattress, whether you’re trying to maximise space or accommodate as many visitors as possible. Let’s look at some of the most popular bunk bed mattress sizes and measurements available.
Mattress for a Twin
Mattresses for twin bunk beds are 38 inches broad and 75 inches tall. Twin mattresses will fit in a standard bunk bed, and bunk beds with distinctive frames, such as loft, triple, or short bunk beds, will as well.
Toddlers, children, teens, and shorter adults all benefit from a twin-size mattress. A single twin mattress is too small to accommodate more than one person, but most bunk beds have two mattresses, so this shouldn’t be a problem.
Mattress Size: Twin XL
Twin XL mattresses measure 38 inches wide by 80 inches long, which is 5 inches longer than ordinary twin mattresses. A twin XL bunk bed is popular among teenagers and dorm rooms since it accommodates people who are over 6 feet tall. Furthermore, twin XL bunk beds are ideal for growing youngsters, so you won’t have to worry about replacing their bed frame or mattress too frequently.
Mattress Size: Full (Double)
With a width of 54 inches and a height of 75 inches, full mattresses are one of the widest mattresses suitable for bunk beds. A full size bed isn’t quite as long as a twin XL bed, but it is wider, allowing people to spread out more comfortably at night.
Full-size mattresses aren’t nearly big enough for two teenagers or adults to sleep on. When in a pinch, such as on a vacation or overnight, two youngsters can share a full mattress.
Some bunk beds have two full mattresses, but most have a full mattress on the bottom bunk and a twin or twin XL mattress on the top bunk. Mattresses become heavier as they become larger, making them unsuitable for the top bunk.

After all, king mattresses are most popular among adults and couples who are unlikely to wish to share their space with a third party. Although king mattress bunk beds may be available in some holiday houses, the majority of couples will not choose one.
Bunk Beds Come in a Variety of Styles
Although most bunk bed frames consist of one mattress stacked on top of another, this isn’t the only form available. Other bunk bed frames, whether they incorporate storage units or multipurpose furniture, are designed to optimise space.
Standard
The normal bunk bed has one bunk stacked on top of the other and is around 70 inches tall. It’s the most popular bunk bed on the market, and it works well in a variety of settings, including apartments, dorm rooms, children’s rooms, and holiday homes.
A conventional bunk bed configuration can include two twins, twin XLs, or even a twin over a full or larger mattress.
Shorty
Shorty bunk bed frames are smaller and shorter than regular bunk bed frames, measuring roughly 55 inches tall on average. Because the frames aren’t tall, they’re a safe option for small children who require or desire a bunk bed. This reduces the chance of injury if a youngster falls out of the top bunk.
Because shorty bunk beds are shorter than conventional bunk beds, they may be uncomfortable for teenagers and adults. If you’re not a child, the bottom bunk has less overhead headroom than regular bunks, making it difficult to sit upright in bed.
Triple
A triple bunk bed is similar to a regular or shorty bunk bed, except instead of two beds, it has three piled on top of each other. They’re frequent in vacation homes or rentals because they can accommodate a large number of people.
Because triple loft bunks have three beds, they can reach heights of nearly 90 inches. Tall ceilings are necessary for sleepers to have adequate overhead clearance.
The bottom bunks of triple bunks, like conventional bunk beds, can be full, queen, or even king size to accommodate more sleepers, though this isn’t typical.
L-Shaped
L-shaped bunk beds have two top bunks that are joined at the corners to form an L. This way, there’s room beneath the bunks for toys, a desk, or whatever else you want, yet two people can still share a room comfortably.
The top bunk may appeal to some children more than the bottom bed. In the case of children sharing a room, an L-shaped bunk bed may help prevent a fight over who gets the top bunk.
Loft
Only the top bunk of a loft bunk bed is used, and the bottom bunk is left empty. When trying to maximise a little area for a single person, a loft bed is an excellent solution. Instead of a bottom bed, a person might add a couch, desk, dresser, or utilise it as a child’s play space.
Futon
Another form of frame is a futon bunk bed, which only has a top bunk and a futon in place of the bottom bunk. Futons are couch-bed combos that allow you to sit, relax, and watch TV during the day. At night, or if you have visitors, just unfold the futon and use it as a bed.
RV

Trundle
A trundle bunk bed resembles a regular bunk bed except for the addition of a pull-out mattress from beneath the bottom bunk. Because a trundle bed is usually thin and compact, it’s a wonderful alternative for unexpected visitors.
The third bed will either fit into a huge drawer beneath the bottom mattress and sit near to the ground, or it will be on a pop-up structure that will raise guests off the ground. If you remove the third mattress from a drawer-style trundle bunk bed, you can use the space for storage.
