At his lowest point in life, attorney Hyman Kazan is trying to find peace in alcohol. With a failing legal career and a failed love, Kazan is desperate to find solace in a glass of wine. However, when the death of a young man is discovered in downtown Vancouver, it is quickly found that the victim and Kazan’s girlfriend’s new lover, Judge Smith, have a connection to one another. Alarming facts are revealed as Kazan begins to investigate Smith’s involvement in the murder and threaten to destroy it. It is challenging to keep accurate track of the plot as it moves between the sharp point of view changes and flashbacks in the past. The story becomes increasingly horrific as Kazan delves deeper into Smith’s involvement in the case. Characters like Kazan, who is shown as a tortured soul held tight by wrath and trauma, will be remembered fondly by readers. A particular scandal involves Hyman Kazan, who has been a member of the legal system for quite an extended period. The present and the past torture his character. Still, more importantly, he is a character who is fed up and tired of justice. Judicial systems that let victims down while allowing criminals to get away with murder and a helpless rape victim who was viciously attacked by a person carrying a knife are depicted in one of the book’s initial chapters as grappling with the pain of not bringing justice to the victim. In this case, the guy was released and allowed to go free despite overwhelming evidence against him because the evidence was insufficient for the judge. More particularly, the victim could not define how she had been penetrated since she was scared and afflicted by anxiety.
There have been numerous real-life instances in which perpetrators of crimes have been allowed to walk free due to flaws in the legal system. Traditionally, justice is blind, but I would go even further and say that justice is not only blind but also deaf, mute, and lacking in physical presence. If only true justice could be attained one day, but for the time being, the only thing that counts is hope, not actual logical reasoning.
